To the ancient Mayans, the gold resin from the copal tree was a sacred gift to man from the divine God of the Earth and was burned at dawn in honour of the rising sun. Also used by the Aztecs and Incas, copal was considered an important tool in prophecying and in strengthening healing abilities. Damar gum resin from Indonesia is also known as cat-eye resin because of its refractive qualities. The Malay word damar means°light° which describes the characteristics of the resin: In darkness, it is the bringer of light lifting the spirits from gloom and despair. Valued for its incense burning properties, Gum Sandarac from the Atlas region in Morocco is a resin that seeps from the bark and branches of the Cypress Sandarac tree.
